It’s the difference between your final mix and a releasable product. Mastering (or post production) takes place between mixing and duplication. It is the final tweak phase for your music and can make recordings more punchy, warm and full. Mastering can increase the overall level (volume) of your recording and bring out details not heard before.
Should I Master or Not?
If you plan to duplicate and sell your CD in retail outlets then by all means…YES! All major labels use mastering to bring out the consistency of recordings that are anything but consistent. Tracking songs one at a time at possibly more than one studio over a few months can result in different peak levels and different low and high end EQs. A mastering engineer can apply EQ and compression to make the recording consistent from track to track. Consistency is important for any commercial CD since it will be played on anything from a boom box to a top of the line home system. A mastered CD will sound great on anything.
